Call for Submissions: Ritual
THE PROMPT: Tell the story of a textile object that is important to you as it relates to RITUAL.
How and when? Please send your submissions (and questions and comments) to socialfabriczine@gmail.com by March 16, 2026.
What is Ritual? The definition of ritual we’re using for this project is a practice that:
- has a specific order that is repeated.
- connects to a larger story. Maybe the story of who you are, who your people are, or what matters most in the universe.
- alters or marks space and time, or is an altered space or time.
What form would you like your submission to take? (See previous issues at socialfabriczine.com for more ideas)
- Personal essay
- Interview (if so, reach out to Allison and Max at socialfabriczine@gmail.com)
- Collage
- Drawing
- Photographs
- Poetry
- Comic (I love getting comics!)
- Some combination of the above
- Something that’s not on this list but can be printed in a zine – that’s the only limitation
Want more structure? Some guiding questions to help shape your submission:
- What is the function of this object in ritual?
- Is this a sacred object? What makes it so? (treated more as a subject than an object, has special etiquette – animism)
- Why is textile the medium for this object? What’s important about textile for this ritual? Why is this made out of fabric and not something else? What is important about the materials it’s made out of?
- How does this object connect people?
Need some examples to get you started?
- Tallit (Jewish prayer shawl)
- Your favorite hair towel or bonnet used in personal care rituals (or your hair itself – some call hair the original textile!)
- Prayer rugs
- Priestly garments
- Wedding garments
- Prom dress
- A special occasion tablecloth
- Altar cloths
- Paj Ntaub (Hmong story cloths)
